Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM) have inherent advantages such as simple structure with non-winding construction in rotor side, fail safe because of its characteristic which has a high tolerance, robustness, low cost with no permanent magnet in the structure, and possible operation in high temperatures or in intense temperature variations. The torque production in switched reluctance motor structures comes from the tendency of the rotor poles to align with the excited stator poles. The operation principle is based on the difference in the magnetic reluctance for magnetic field lines between aligned and unaligned rotor position when a stator coil is excited, the rotor experiences a force which will pull the rotor to the aligned position. This lecture deals with principles of design and operation as well as industrial applications. Some advantages and disadvantages are also introduced for the control and applications.
About the author:
Jin-Woo Ahn was born in Busan, Korea, in 1958. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Pusan National University, Busan, Korea, in 1984, 1986 and 1992, respectively.
He has been with Kyungsung University, Busan, Korea, as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Mechatronics Engineering since 1992. He was a visiting researcher in the Speed Lab at Glasgow University, U.K., a visiting professor in the Dept. of ECE, WEMPEC at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA from July 1998 to July 1999 and in the Dept. of ECE at Virginia Tech from July 2006 to June 2007. Prof. Ahn is an adjunct professor of Shenyang University of Technology, China.
Prof. Ahn was a professor in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering from 1992 to 2006 and has been a professor in the Dept. of Mechatronics Engineering since 2007. He moved to the Dept. of Mechatronics Engineering after he founded the department by the university’s request. It was because his university’s needs to strengthen the college and to match a new regional industry in the Busan and southeast Korea. He has served as a department chair of the department for four years and his department has now top ranked for last seven years in the Annual Department Evaluation of 50 departments in his university. This demonstrates the excellence of his leadership and ability as an educator and a professor. He always emphasizes experiments, and combines lecture and laboratory experiences for his students. He always has an oral test after every term examination. His teaching methodology and concept of education are very effective for creating an understanding of the principles of his students’ major subjects, as well as being effective for engineers who have to work in industrial fields.
He was the director of the Advanced Electric Machinery and Power Electronics Center. The center is to develop reluctance and advanced motors and drive systems for industrial applications, and to support graduate students in the universities of the Busan area. He has been also the director of the Smart Mechatronics Advanced Research and Technology(SMART) Institute and the Senior Easy Life Regional Innovation System(SeLRIS) since July 2008, which both are authorized and supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Korea. The SMART Institute is to develop motor and drive system for an HVAC and electro hydraulic system which is used widely in an industry. SeLRIS is a center to supports the companies which develop products for seniors and handicapped people. Prof. Ahn has a strong interest on regional economy and industry. He has contributed to regional industry through many official activities. He advised many technical and strategic plans in automobile and senior citizen product companies. He was a leader of the research group of the Busan Regional Technical Road Map, and has been a strategic advisor of Busan Metropolitan City. He was also the president of the Korea Regional Innovation System Association which is a society for regional development and was founded and is supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Korea.
His research activities are also excellent. He is the author of five books including switched reluctance motor (SRM), the author of more than 200 papers and has more than 50 patents. His current research interests are advanced motor drive systems and electric vehicle drives. He is among the most renowned researchers in SRM. Furthermore, he has received many prizes and awards, among them, the Park Min-Ho Special Prize from the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers, is very honorable prize in the field of electrical engineers. Prof. Min-Ho Park was a founder and luminary of Korea in the field of power electronics engineering and the prize was founded by his donation. Prof. Ahn received the Outstanding Paper Award in ICEMS2012, Japan, in which only 3 papers were selected for the Outstanding Paper Award from 330 papers presented in the conference. He also received the 2011 Busan Science and Technology Award from the Federation of Busan Science and Technology. The prize was also very honorable because it is given to researchers and professors who achieve remarkable research results in Busan Metropolitan City. Prof. Ahn donated his prize about U$10,000 to his university as a scholarship. He is known as one of the most famous professors in his university because he has the largest laboratory and the most research funds. He received the Best Industrial Cooperation Award (2009 and 2012) and the Best Research Award (2008 and 2011, 2015) from the president of Kyungsung University. He also received a Ministerial Citation from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Korea at Dec., 2011 for his contributions to electrical engineering and industry. Last year he received Order of Science and Technology Merit from the President of the Republic of Korea on the Science Day, April 21, 2016 for his numerous contributions for the electrical engineering. This order was awarded only 6 researchers this year all around in Korea. He executed many research projects for the government and for companies in the fields of electric machines and senior products. One of his successful developments is the switched reluctance drive for a hydraulic pump system which is used for a numerical control (NC) machine. The performance of his developed 8/6 SRM is very good and its step response is less than 100ms; the efficiency of his SR drive system is an improvement of more than 10% above that of a conventional induction motor. His recent researches are focused on novel structures, bearingless and high speed SRM and related technologies. The novel structure SRM includes 4/2, 4/5, 4/3 and 6/5 type SRM, which are all having patents applied. He has also researched much about bearingless SRM. Some novel types and control algorithms are proposed and patented. The motor he developed is effective for high speed and clear circumstances; for example, use in a blood pump. His high speed SRM is good for use in spindles or very high speed drives, and his motor reached up to 60,000 rpm and is now being considered for application in a blower for a fuel cell system. Another project was to develop a sensorless drive and hybrid type SRM. His research results were excellent and the control algorithm is being applied for patent and the performance of the developed hybrid motor was suitable for application in home appliances. He also has many patents and has published research papers which are very useful for commercial and industrial fields. His technical book about SRM is very famous and is a unique textbook in Korea; it is known to be a very useful textbook for researchers and engineers. He is also an author of a chapter of an open access book about SRM, and its cumulative downloads was 8,000 during the five months since published in June 2012.
Prof. Ahn served as a president of the Society of Electric Machinery and Energy Conversion Systems, the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.
